  • Lincoln-Mercury introduces the Comet (Spring).

  • G.M. debuts the Buick Special, Olds F-85, Pontiac Tempest and Chrysler, the Dodge Lancer as 1961 models (Fall).

  • Glen Pray purchases the assets of the Auburn, Cord and Duesenburg plant in Auburn, Indiana, and annouced plans to produce parts for the three cars.

  • International Harvester Co. reported it would enter the compact car field with the Scout. The new vehicle would have a four-cylinder engine and an integral body.

  • Chrysler annouced plans to stop production of the De Soto in November.

  • U.S. auto makers produce 6.7 million cars
